This 1961 Disney adaptation of the German novel Das doppelte Lottchen (The Double Lottie) stars Hayley Mills as two identical twins, separated near birth when their parents divorce, who discover each other at a summer camp as teenagers and decide to switch places in an attempt to bring their parents together again. A strong film about the power of love (love of spouse, love of children, love of sibling) and reconciliation, this classic features Maureen O’Hara and Brian Keith as the divorced parents, with solid supporting roles filled by Charlie Ruggles as the twins’ maternal grandfather, Una Merkel as their father’s gossipy housekeeper, Leo G. Carroll as the Rev. Dr. Mosby, and Joanna Barnes as Vicky Robinson, the woman the twins’ father is unexpectedly planning to marry. Filled with equal parts drama and comedy, tenderness and farce, this classic is a delightful film.
