The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Written by Michael Leaser
Saturday, 16 August 2008

In this second installment of the Narnia series, Prince Caspian, the rightful heir to the Narnian throne, uses an ancient magical horn to call for help as he struggles to survive his uncle’s attempts to kill him. Help eventually arrives in the form of the four Pevensie children, who return to Narnia 1,300 years after they left, though only a year has passed for them in England. By the time Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy join Caspian, he has united with the old Narnians, talking creatures driven into hiding by Caspian’s ancestors, and the fight to live has become a war to claim his throne and restore the old Narnians. Caspian soon finds himself in a leadership struggle with Peter, who has had difficulty making the adjustment from king back to schoolboy and feels the need to prove himself, often sacrificing sound strategy for bold, but unnecessary risks. Through their struggles, Caspian, the Pevensies, and the Old Narnians remember to place their faith in the great lion king Aslan and his plans for them and Narnia. Though the cast is generally very capable, one character steals practically every scene in which he appears: the über-valiant mouse Reepicheep, voiced with expert attention to both the character’s nobility and vanity by comic Eddie Izzard.
