Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven star in this faith-renewing tale of a bishop who has lost sight of his divine calling and the angel sent to help him rediscover it. Bishop Henry Brougham (Niven) has grand plans to build a great new cathedral for his parish, but he finds himself spending most of his time courting wealthy, self-interested donors to finance the project instead of ministering to the people in his community and devoting himself to his family. His frequent and lengthy absences for cathedral business leave his wife Julia (Young) longing for the simpler, albeit less prosperous, yet more spiritually fulfilling, days of her husband’s ministry. Bishop Brougham’s prayer for guidance is answered in the form of the angel Dudley (Grant), who not only helps the bishop rediscover his mission and renew his love for his wife and daughter but helps everyone around him see the glory of God among them. The Bishop’s Wife earned Oscar nominations for Best Film Editing, Best Music, Best Director, and Best Picture, winning for Best Sound.
