Amy Adams stars as an unflaggingly optimistic young woman from the animated world of Andalasia who, on her wedding day, finds herself banished by an evil queen to the real-life world of
New York City
, a land where “there are no happily-ever-afters.” Through her sunny disposition and innocent charm and honesty, Giselle (Adams) infuses her belief in the power of love into everyone she meets, including a couple on the brink of divorce, the jaded divorce lawyer who gives her shelter, and virtually everyone in Central Park during a show-stopping musical number from Disney song veterans Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. As her prince comes to
New York
to rescue her, Giselle herself learns about the unfathomable depths and joys of true love.
Adams
’ total engagement with her character is indispensable to making this film’s appreciation of all things good and lovely work. James Marsden is winning as the chivalric, fearless prince in search of his princess, and Patrick Dempsey conveys the right mix of pathos and sensibility in his role as the single dad on the brink of marriage who’s learning to love again. Academy Award-winner Susan Sarandon is outstanding in her perfectly sinister take on the classic Disney evil queen/witch.
