The Sound of Music

Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews star in this vibrant and inspiring musical tale of Austrian Captain Georg von Trapp, his seven children, and their governess Maria, a nun-in-training who re-awakens the von Trapp family’s love of life and music and discovers her true calling in the process. The loss of Captain von Trapp’s wife many years ago still casts a pall over the von Trapp family, and the increasing political influence of the Nazi party in late-1930s Austria is contributing to the gloom. Shining through this malaise is the energetic, headstrong Maria, who takes to heart Mother Abbess’s advice to “climb every mountain” before her and imparts that lesson to the von Trapps through her fearless love and faithfulness, and her passion for music. Julie Andrews (Maria) and Peggy Wood (Mother Abbess) both earned Oscar nominations for their stellar work. The Sound of Music received another eight Academy Award nominations, winning five Oscars for Best Sound, Best Music, Best Film Editing, Best Director (Robert Wise), and Best Picture.
