Jimmy Stewart stars in this delightful tale of a pleasant and soft-hearted middle-aged man who spends his days making casual conversation with strangers, inviting them to dinner at his home, and frequenting local bars with his best friend, Harvey, a six-foot tall rabbit that may or may not exist and that apparently only he can see. Once a rising young man in his community, Elwood P. Dowd (Stewart) found himself confronted with the idea that a person could be perceived in life as either “oh so smart” or “oh so pleasant,” and he chooses “pleasant.” Most people who meet Dowd leave with a smile on their face and a skip in their step, but his sister and niece, who live with Dowd, see him as a mentally imbalanced loafer who is inhibiting his niece’s prospects for a good marriage. His sister begins commitment proceedings for Dowd at a local sanitarium, but finds herself committed instead when she confesses to the doctor that she has seen Harvey herself. It’s up to the “imbalanced” Dowd and his friend Harvey to rectify the situation. Harvey is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Mary Chase. The film version earned Jimmy Stewart his fourth Oscar nomination for Best Actor and a Best Supporting Actress Award for Josephine Hull in the role of Dowd’s sister, Veta Louise Simmons.
