Hard work and determination yield a minor miracle for a 30-year-old bartender who attends an open tryout for the Philadelphia Eagles and ends up making the team. Based on a true story, Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg) plays pickup football games with his neighborhood buddies when he isn’t tending bar. His wife has just left him because she believes his life will never amount to anything. When new Eagles coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) announces open tryouts, Papale’s buddies, a father with whom he bonds over the Eagles, and his wife’s judgment convince him to test his abilities in front of some of the best football coaches in the country. Papale’s flash of speed and skill earn him an invitation to training camp, where his toughness and tenacity, particularly in the face of setbacks, inspire Vermeil, his new teammates, and an entire city. Kinnear is particularly impressive as the high-strung Eagles coach trying to turn around an ailing franchise and prove himself in a city with notoriously tough sports fans who finds a new heart and soul for his team in the breast of a Philadelphia bartender.
